Question
I am a case manager at a correctional facility, and I have an inmate with
type 2 diabetes
who is going to be maxing out his sentence and leaving prison. He has no
money, and we have no resources to purchase a glucose meter for him. Can
you tell me where I might be able to obtain a meter and strips free for
him? He will have employment 30 days after he leaves prison.
Answer
It should be reasonably easy to obtain a free meter readily from any of
the following sources:
- Any nearby diabetes center (at a hospital, doctor's office, or
Community Health Center).
- Via a sales rep (ask any diabetes program or pharmacist about who's
most likely to assist).
- By asking at the local office of the
American Diabetes Association
(check the local Yellow Pages or ask any diabetes program).
It may be more difficult to find free strips, but I'd try the same
resources.
