Question

I currently work with a gentleman who just found that out his 11 year old daughter has diabetes. I am not sure to what extent she has diabetes, but I do know that he is scared and wants to do what is best. I am sure his doctor gave him some information, but I would like to get him more detailed information to help him and his family deal with this disease. I would greatly appreciate any assistance you could provide.

Answer

Any child of 11 years of age who is diagnosed with diabetes should be under the care of a pediatric diabetes team that includes a pediatric endocrinologist, diabetes nurse educator, diabetes dietitian, social worker or counselor, and other resources who could help the patient and family cope with the illness.

If this is not the case for your friend, he should ask for a referral to a specialty center that can provide such services.

There are many resources on-line: go to Google and type in "children with diabetes" to find some!
