Question
My dog is a 16 year old pom-terrier, still has a lot of spunk, and I love
her to pieces. She is not fat and was relatively until all the peeing
started. She
she still seems healthy, but lots of her teeth have fallen out, and her
breath could stop a tank! Is there anything other than insulin injections?
I am going to switch to a higher fibre diet, other than that I am lost.
Please point me in the right direction.
Answer
With her teeth falling out and bad breath, your dog needs a dental! Not
only will you appreciate it, but with improved dental health, the diabetes
should also be easier to control.
An improved diet is definitely a step in the right direction to controlling
diabetes. Oral medications for diabetes don't work well in dogs. The type
of diabetes they develop requires insulin injections, usually twice a day,
although some dogs may be managed on one shot a day. Testing can be done at
home using urine strips or a blood glucometer. Insulin is inexpensive and
dogs tolerate the shots very well. If your dog has diabetes, please keep
her healthy by giving insulin, supervised by your veterinarian.
