Victoza® (liraglutide) is the second drug in a new class of injectable diabetes medications, called GLP-1 analogs. It will be available in Europe in 2009, but is not yet approved in the United States.

  • Brand name: Victoza®
  • Class: Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue
  • For: Type 2 diabetes
  • Route of Administration: once-daily injection
  • Action: mimicks GLP-1, allowing secretion of insulin by beta cells. Also delays gastric emptying, and suppresses meal-related glucagon secretion.
  • Manufacturer: Novo Nordisk
  • Status: Approved in Europe July 3 2009. Undergoing FDA review as of July 2009.
